  • ABSTRACT (English)

  • A dendroecological study was carried out on the European Larch, the Arolla Pine and the Mountain Pine near the subalpine forest limit in the region of Briançon, in different ecological conditions (calcareous and non calcareous bedrock, northern and southern slopes). The response of trees to climate is much more determined by species than by habitats. The behavior of the Larch appears very particular: its radial growth presents no correlation with the precipitation but correlates very well with the monthly mean temperatures, particularly those of the previous autumn and those of the beginning of the vegetation period. The principal difference between the behaviors of the two Pines concerns their responses to precipitation: the arolla Pine appears more mesophile with a strong sensitivity to drought during July on southern slopes. It is also more sensitive than the mountain Pine to the temperature at the beginning and at the end of the vegetation period.
